BEHAVIOUR OF THREE ROOTSTOCKS TOLERANT TO THE CITRUS TRISTEZA VIRUS IN NURSERY CONDITIONS

Abstract

In Cazones, Veracruz, growth of three rootstocks tolerant to Citrus Tristeza Virus were studied under nursery conditions: citranges ?Troyer ? and ?Carrizo? (Poncirus trifoliata x Citrus sinensis) and ?Cleopatra? mandarin (Citrus reshni Hort. ex. Tang). ?Sour? orange (Citrus aurantium Lin.) was the control. Early evaluations of their performance (May and June, 1993) pointed out Sour orange as the best rootstock, but three months later both citranges showed similar stem heigth and diameter as Sour orange. Cleopatra mandarin grew slowly which implies a longer period before it can be grafted. Therefore, both citranges seem to be a good choice to replace Sour orange, which is susceptible to tristeza.
